Think like a rockstar: Sales Trends – “The future rocks”
Interview with Ståle Økland, writer, thinker, trend expert and founder of „Global Retail Trends", Oslo.
Mr Økland, what do you mean by telling us to "Think like a rockstar"? And how did you come up with this concept?
Rockstars are very passionate about what they do. They are organized in small units, basically without directors. Everybody has to contribute. I also find it fascinating how they engage their fans. The concept came up by coincindence. I met a rockband when I wrote my first book „TrendMania", about how trends are created. I got curious when I heard what they were telling about the rock life.
When/Why did you first take a scientific approach to the term "trend"?
Everybody is talking about trends. I wanted to find out what trends really are, and how they are created.
Your recently published book "Datakrasj" focuses on the Digital Economy. From a Retail/Marketing perspective: Where are the challenges of Digitalization? Its advantages? Its drawbacks?
One problem seems to be that many jobs disapper without being replaced by new ones. Most of what is getting digitalized is also becoming free – music, books, movies and so on. It's also difficult to earn money, because there are so many retailers online selling things cheap. For example: Amazon is losing money.
What was the first thing you ever bought online? What will online shopping look like in 5 years?
I think it was a flight ticket. In five years there will be 30% less shops and shopping malls because online shopping is taking over. We will use our cell phone even more to shop.
I saw videos of you holding keynotes in German. Where did you learn to speak it? Will you be speaking in German at our conference "Handel und Wandel in Tankstellen"?
Yes, I will be speaking in German. My famiiy lived in Leverkusen for three years when I was a kid. My father played football for Bayer Leverkusen. Later I studied Germanistik (and Sociology and History).
